What Is It?
In order to understand how this invention is a turning point we need to know what it is. The atomic bomb is a bomb that creates extremely destructive power from a quick release of nuclear energy. It causes great damage through heat, blast, and radioactivity.
When Was It Created?
The atomic bomb was first tested explosion in 1945, but development and confirmation of building the atomic bomb began in 1939.
Who Was It Created By?
Albert Einstein (left) and Leo Szilard (right).
It was thought up by Leo Szilard, although it was created by a group of scientists including him. Leo went to Albert Einstein to help him grant permission to begin building by President Roosevelt. Then in 1945, they were granted permission to begin building. The picture to the right is Albert and Leo working together to decide whether or not building the Atomic Bomb would be a good idea.
Why Was It Created?
On August 2, 1939, just before the beginning of World War II, Albert Einstein wrote to then President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Einstein and several other scientists told Roosevelt of efforts in Nazi Germany to purify uranium-235, which could be used to build an atomic bomb. The United States had to take action in building the atomic bomb too just in case the Nazi were to finish build it completely and use it against the United States. It was shortly thereafter that the United States Government began the serious undertaking known then only as "The Manhattan Project."
